History of the Township Flag Pole

Some residents love it and some hate it, but the flagpole in front of the Portage County Courthouse in Ravenna is a distinctive landmark that can be seen for miles and marks Ravenna’s downtown area.

In 1893 a flag pole was erected in Ravenna Township. In the fall of 1923, it was moved to its present location on land that was donated to the township by the Tappen family. This flag pole is costly to maintain simply by its height and the manner in which it was erected in 1923. In 1994, the estate of Ralph A. Hinman bequeathed money to Ravenna Township for the maintenance of the flag pole. The Township now uses the interest from this bequest to purchase flags for the pole.

ANNOUNCEMENTS & UPCOMING EVENTS:

The Ravenna Township Trustees hosted their second annual Shred Day on Saturday May 19th. The Township collaborated with Neo Shred of Akron again this year for the event. We are excited to announce a total of 45 cars participated this year with 1451 pounds of paper collected, this is the equivalent to 12 trees saved! Think of how many more trees we could save with increased participation. Neo Shred tells us, for every one ton of paper collected and recycled 17 trees are saved. If you did not get to take advantage of the free shredding this year, please come out for the event next year. The shredding is safe; residents can even stay and watch while their documents are shredded. All of Neo Shred’s employees’ are bonded, insured and background checked. Neo Shred is even compliant with the National Association of Information Destruction. The Shred Day provides a great way to protect residents’ confidential information and protect the environment at the same time. We are looking forward to our next Shred Day in 2013!

The Ravenna Township Service Department will begin brush chipping on April 15, 2012 for the Ravenna Township residents. Chipping will be done on Mondays and Tuesdays unless road projects arise and weather permitting. Please contact the Service Department at 330-296-5583 or 330-297-1998 with any questions.
